Placing Safety First at the Pool
Are you taking the right steps when it comes to your foot safety while at the pool? We love a pool day, too. We also know that there is a risk of post-pool problems that can impact our feet. The top concerns are slips and falls at the pool and fungal infections.
Dr. Anant Joshi at Advanced Foot Care of NJ, LLC knows that accidents happen. There are often many people at the pool, and their minds are all about having fun. The great news is that you can still have fun while being safe. If you are planning a pool adventure, keep these foot care tips at the top of your mind. We still have some time before the official launch of pool season.
Pack your pool bag
If you are showing up to the pool with your flip-flops, there is something missing. There are many other helpful items to include in your bag. Here are three must-haves:
- Proper pool shoes (avoid flip-flops)
- Sunblock (protect your skin)
- Personal towel (keep things clean to avoid fungal infections)
Watch your cuts
Be considerate of others who may be swimming in the pool. Do you have a large cut? If so, stay at home. Keep it clean and covered and visit a pool at another time.
- If you have diabetes, always check with your podiatrist.
- If you receive a cut at the pool, stop and address it immediately.
- Don’t walk barefoot.
Walk with caution
We have all been close to a slip or a fall at the pool. The areas around the pool can become very slippery as splashes spray water.
- Wearing the right shoes helps to reduce your risk of a fall.
- If you think you have an ankle sprain, put a pause on your pool day.
- If you see something, say something; alert the pool team to slippery spots.
Pool season is the sign that so much fun is on the way. We hope you and your family can enjoy your time without any issues. If you experience a fungal infection, a non-healing wound, or an ankle sprain, we are here to help.
