Home Improvements for Falls Prevention
Did you know September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month? It is when we can all sit down and reflect on our risk of falls. If you are 65 or older or care for a loved one this age, we encourage you to follow along. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of four older Americans falls annually. Have you fallen?
Although older Americans are at greater risk, we should all consider ways to avoid a tumble. A severe injury can have long-lasting impacts. It can even hinder you from fully living and enjoying everyday activities. Dr. Anant Joshi at Advanced Foot Care of NJ, LLC hopes he can help you make a few changes at home to keep you and your family safe from a fall.
Take a look at your house. Here are three things you can do right now to help with falls prevention:
Add more nightlights
Are you walking in the dark on the way to the bathroom or kitchen? Think about navigating your space and imagine how a nightlight can make a significant difference. We recommend brightening the hallway, bathroom, kitchen, and other common areas. Extra light can add comfort and confidence to your loved ones. Who wants to feel like they can’t safely move around the house after the sun sets?
Delete the mess
Is there too much stuff in your house? From bulky or sharp furniture to extra clutter on the floor. These additional items can increase the risk of a trip or fall. Take time to move these items to another less-traveled part of the house or donate them for good. Creating a clear pathway is a win for everyone, especially for guests who may be unfamiliar with the layout of your home.
Say “goodbye” to slippery rugs
They may be beautiful, but slippery rugs are a certain danger. Walking on a rug without a grip can lead to a painful injury. There are many risks of discomfort after a fall, from back injuries to head injuries. Find ways to ensure your rug won’t move or let it go.
