Diabetes and Keeping Your Feet Healthy
If you have diabetes, you know the struggle of leg pain, nerve damage, and numb feet. That’s why keeping your feet healthy and safe every day is vital. With diabetes, sores, blisters, and wounds are more likely to occur. Even the smallest cuts and injuries to your feet and ankles can quickly become serious issues. How can you avoid any long-term complications? The easiest solution is maintaining a daily foot care routine. Read our top tips below for keeping your feet healthy!
Focus on Footwear
Wearing the right pair of shoes is essential, not only for the comfort of your feet, but for their safety, too.
- Always check your shoes before putting them on, as debris may be hard to spot when it comes to diabetes and numbness in the feet
- Avoid going barefoot – this includes in your house!
- Frequently wash and change your socks
- Invest in custom orthotics, which can ease some of the pain you may feel
- Look into diabetic socks, which have extra padding and fibers that wick away sweat
- Try on new shoes at the end of the day when your feet are the most swollen. If you’re stuck between two sizes, choose the larger size
- Never buy shoes with the intention of breaking them in. Shoes should feel comfy when you try them on in the store!
Treat Your Feet
Washing your feet every day is a great habit to get into. Use lukewarm water and mild soap, making sure to wash in between your toes. Alternatively, you can do a foot bath with Epsom salts or baking soda. Always make sure to dry your feet completely after your wash. Follow up with lotion for added self-care. Cut and file your nails regularly. Keep an eye on your feet, even inspecting the underside of your foot. If you notice anything strange or unusual, call your podiatrist. Here are some things to watch out for:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Cuts
- Blisters
- Corns
- Ingrown nails
- Calluses
- Bruising
- Fungal infections
