How Your Feet Warn You of Thyroid Disease
Happy New Year! We’d like to start 2023 by giving the spotlight to Thyroid Awareness Month, which we celebrate all of January. Did you know our feet give us signs of a malfunctioning thyroid problem? Our thyroid controls so many important hormones, so it’s no surprise that it has a role in so many aspects of our health, including our foot health. How can your feet show you may be dealing with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism? Let’s take a look!
Dry, Cracked Feet
Those with hypothyroidism are no strangers to dry, cracked, sometimes leathery skin, especially on their feet. Have you been noticing dryer soles on your feet? Get your thyroid checked! Painful fissures are also common.
Cold Feet
Our thyroids control our metabolism. When we have an underactive thyroid, it can slow down metabolism, leading to an internal temperature drop. If you find your hands and feet are frequently cold, it may be due to thyroid disease.
Swollen Feet
Having swollen feet isn’t uncommon. As we move along our day, our feet naturally swell, especially if we work on our feet or participate in sports and physical activity. But if you find your feet and ankles are almost always swollen, it might be time to check your thyroid.
Smelly Feet
When it comes to hyperthyroidism, you might find yourself sweating more. Even when it comes to your feet! Excess sweat and moisture are bound to make our feet, socks, and shoes smell over time. Luckily, there are ways to prevent this!
Fungal Toenails
Infections are a lot easier to catch when you have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. If you find you are developing Athlete’s foot, fungal infections, or toenail fungus more often and more easily than before, it may be due to thyroid disease.
