This fun often has unfortunate consequences, like wear and tear, injuries, and complications to their feet and ankles. What can you do to limit and avoid any pain and discomfort? Here are some quick tips and tricks for protecting your child’s feet this summer!
Common Foot Problems For Children
Kids can develop most of the same foot and ankle conditions adults typically suffer from. Some of the most common problems include:
Prevention and Treatment
The best defense against foot and ankle conditions is to prevent them in the first place. Below are some of the easiest ways you can help do so this summer:
- Proper footwear – Because children’s feet are constantly growing, it’s important to check their shoe size regularly. Tight shoes can be restrictive to small feet that are still forming. Make sure there’s plenty of room for their toes. If you’re at a pool, be sure your child wears flip-flops or sandals to prevent contracting fungal infections.
- Stretching – Stretching can keep your child’s feet strong and flexible. Just be careful not to stretch too much where strains and sprains can occur. Have your child practice forward or side lunges. Also, toe touches can help.
- Custom orthotics – Custom orthotics aren’t just for adults! These shoe inserts are designed to mold to the exact shape of their feet. They provide the proper support where needed most and may help treat conditions like flat feet.
If your child is complaining of foot pain or is showing signs of an injury, it’s best to take them to their podiatrist for a checkup. They’ll be able to swiftly diagnose and treat any conditions they may have.
