Plantar Fasciitis: 7 Key Points
At Advanced Foot Care of NJ, LLC, we know that when it comes to your feet, surgery should be your last resort. In fact, more conservative methods, especially when used in conjunction, can often deal with persistent problems like plantar fasciitis for good.
Below, you’ll find seven different ways to try and manage plantar fasciitis yourself. We hope they help you stay sure-footed and pain-free in the days ahead!
- Inflammation: It’s tempting to reach for anti-inflammatory pills, but it’s better to be cautious when using them and only take them in moderation. After all, overuse of anti-inflammatory medication can have some serious side effects. Cortisone is a safer and faster option for most of our patients.
- Stretching: A daily routine of calf muscle stretching can provide good results with a minimum of time and effort invested. We also recommend using a night splint if you own one.
- Footwear: Rather than flat heels, we suggest a pair of shoes that sports elevated heels to relieve symptoms. Running shoes are also a solid choice.
- Orthotics: Many people associate cushioning and comfort with a decrease in tension, but in reality, it is the control that provides tension relief. That’s why orthotics are always a good option.
- Massages: Roll a tennis ball or frozen water bottle along your arch to your heel to aid your circulation. You can also use your thumb if needed.
- Kitchen Shoes: We suggest sandals if you’re going to be cooking on your feet for extended periods. Birkenstock or Vionic sandals are our preferred choices.
- Targeted Exercise: NOT running and jumping, for obvious reasons. There are plenty of other activities you can select instead: biking, rowing, or swimming are all excellent choices.
If all else fails and you are still in pain, don’t worry! We can still recommend some conservative, non-invasive treatments with high rates of success.
