Mobility During Senior Years
Are you older than 70? Keep reading if you have a parent in this age range, too. Today, we’re talking about mobility for seniors. We want to see them move effortlessly. The joy of movement during senior years is something we should cherish. As podiatrists, we know that healthy, strong legs and good balance are keys to moving with ease.
Dr. Anant Joshi at Advanced Foot Care of NJ, LLC knows how mobility can change with aging. Unfortunately, seniors can lose confidence if they have fallen before. Losing balance is a concern. As a loved one, listen to the fears of seniors. Support and encourage them. You are also around them more often than their doctors. Take notes of what you see. If you notice swaying when walking or standing, tag along for a visit to the doctor.
Spotting signs of leg weakness early could help to prevent a fall. Broken bones, head injuries, and even death may be the results of a fall. If you see a senior shuffling their feet instead of picking them up when walking, don’t dismiss this tell-tale sign of weak legs. Contact us.
Keep in mind that other conditions may affect balance and coordination, too. Diabetes, medications, and other health conditions could influence the way seniors move.
To stay proactive, here are some tips to improve leg strength:
Get stronger
- Do some form of weight-bearing exercise and/or leg-strengthening exercise
- Before you start moving, check with a doctor
- Consider low-impact exercise options such as walking or water aerobics
Get help
- Work with a physical therapist to improve leg strength
- Find resources in the community
- Ask for support from family and friends
Get moving
- Commit to walking at least 15 minutes per day
- Check with a doctor about walking shoes
- Stay hydrated and always stretch
