RISK FACTORS FOR FOOT FUNGUS

Whether it’s the damp pair of shoes that live in the corner of your garage or forgetting to wear shower shoes at the indoor pool, foot fungus can become a problem this winter. There are risk factors and ways to prevent this nuisance. Here is our advice.

Foot fungus is also known as onychomycosis. In simple terms, this condition is a fungal infection that can cause your toenails (or fingernails) to thicken, discolor and split. While this can be a nuisance and impact your confidence level, an untreated fungal toenail can also worsen and become painful.

Other conditions may have similar symptoms

Before you jump to conclusions and begin to self-diagnose a fungal infection, visit your podiatrist.  Some other conditions and infections can impact your toenails in a similar way. An injury to the toe is one example. It’s best to receive a proper diagnosis from the podiatrist to ensure that you receive the right treatment the first time.

Know the risk factors for developing this condition

You have an increased chance of developing foot fungus if you have these risk factors:

  • Family history
  • Advancing age
  • Poor health
  • Trauma to the toenail, such as a stubbed toe
  • Showering in communal showers such as the gym or swimming pool
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight and with limited airflow

After receiving a diagnosis, a podiatrist will determine the best treatment plan for your situation. A lot of the next steps will depend on the severity of the infection.
