Your Guide to Senior Foot Care
Senior Foot Care: Prioritizing care of our feet as we age is critical for maintaining healthy, injury-free feet. Unfortunately, most people wait until they have a specific condition or injury to start paying attention to the quality of their health. At Advanced Foot Care of NJ, we encourage all our patients to change their daily habits to include foot care! We put together an easy but efficient guide to senior foot care to ensure your feet stay clean, safe, and pain-free, even as you age. Keep reading for our top tips and tricks!
Inspect Your Feet
One of the best things you can do for your feet is to watch out for any unusual signs and symptoms. Check your feet, especially the underside and between your toes, for any bumps, redness, inflammation, or other points of concern. If you see something, don’t wait! Call your podiatrist and ask them about it. Regarding senior foot care, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Protect Your Feet
Wearing the proper footwear is essential. This applies not only to shoes but socks too, which is a step many people gloss over. If you’re wearing close-toed shoes, putting on socks can help to avoid blisters and other uncomfortable ailments. Socks shouldn’t be too tight and restricting. Materials like acrylic are ideal for socks, as they help wick away moisture.
Remember Your Toes
Ensuring your nails are short and filed daily can make a significant difference. Letting your toenails grow out can lead to pain and make it harder to walk and exercise. It often leads to ingrown toenails, as well. Instead, pick up your nail clippers when you notice them getting long. If you have trouble trimming yourself, visit a local nail salon or ask your podiatrist if they offer nail-cutting services.
