Pay Attention to Your Heel Health This Summer
Summer is in full swing, and we’re sure you’re going outdoors to enjoy everything this season offers. But with long hours on your feet underneath the sun, you might begin to have some pain and discomfort in your feet. Have you started experiencing heel pain? It’s common to start feeling the effects of certain wear-and-tear conditions this time of year.
Here are some common heel problems you should watch for this summer:
Heel Spurs
You can get heel spurs when calcium deposits build up over many months in your heel. Heel spurs are common in athletes, people with diabetes, or anyone who spends much time on their feet. This can cause sharp pain that decreases mobility.
Plantar Fasciitis
Inflammation in this area can cause pain from the heel down to the toes. This condition is called plantar fasciitis and, in extreme cases, can even be debilitating. It’s most often caused by a high or collapsed arch, spending too much time on the feet, or bearing a lot of weight.
Treating Your Heel Pain
It’s best to visit a trusted podiatrist to assess the cause of your heel pain. Below are some of the most common and efficient ways they can help treat you:
- Custom orthotics or other shoe inserts
- Ankle brace
- R.I.C.E. treatment (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Taping or strapping the foot
- Physical therapy
- Surgery, in severe cases
Preventing Heel Pain
What can you do to prevent the onset of heel pain? Remember the following this summer:
- Wear shoes with great arch support
- Avoid walking barefoot
- If your feet start to feel achy, rest
- Consider losing weight, as more weight creates more strain on your feet
- Stretch your feet daily, especially before a workout
