Tips For Preventing Painful Bunions
Bunions can be a real drag. The discomfort a bunion can bring will likely decrease your life quality, leaving you sitting on the sidelines instead of participating in activities and hobbies you used to enjoy. But this doesn’t have to be your new reality. Instead, follow these tips and tricks to relieve bunion pain or prevent one entirely.
What are Bunions?
Bunions are a deformity of your big toe. You may have noticed a bump on the joint or base of your toe. That’s a bunion. Sometimes, the big toe can bend or point inwards, and it can cause pain from mild to severe discomfort.
Signs and Symptoms
- Chronic pain and discomfort when walking
- Swelling, redness, and tenderness
- Thickened skin
Preventing Pain
Unfortunately, bunions do not go away with time. However, you can do a few things to relieve some of their discomfort, such as…
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Wear properly fitting shoes. Ensure your shoe is wide enough to accommodate your bunion so minimal pressure is on it.
- Use warm socks. It can significantly help with stiffness.
- Use ibuprofen. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs can ease the pain.
- Use shoe inserts. Many convenience stores carry arch supports for your shoes; another option is custom orthotics. These are inserts specially designed to fit the unique shape of your foot, providing support and cushioning exactly where it’s needed most.
- Use loose-fitting footwear that avoids putting pressure on the bunion.
- Stretch your big toe. Stretching your big toe can offer pain relief. Use your fingers to pull your big toe back into its normal position. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds to provide some temporary relief.
