Do’s and Don’ts: Recovering Right from Foot and Ankle Surgery
Although minimally invasive procedures are gaining traction and many do not require lengthy recovery times, the truth is that any surgery requires careful attention and specific action on the patient’s part. This is particularly crucial during the recovery phase, when failing to adhere to post-op plans can cause significant complications.
Advanced Foot Care of NJ is always happy to share some key principles and information with patients. To that end, we’ve put together the following guide on the “do’s and don’ts” of post-op recovery.
Do:
- Implement RICE: An acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation, this advice is standard for a reason. It’s generally applicable for many problems and tends to speed recovery while preventing future issues.
- Keep It Clean: Keep any incisions sanitary and dry as instructed by your doctor.
- Move it (gently): Maintaining some movement in your toes and unaffected parts of your foot is crucial. Wiggle your toes, perform gentle ankle circles (if allowed), and engage in light stretches to prevent stiffness.
- Adhere to Physical Therapy Regimens: Follow the physical therapy exercises prescribed by your doctor, which are vital for regaining strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
Don’t:
- Overdo It: Pushing yourself to bear weight too soon or resume strenuous activities can jeopardize your healing and potentially lead to re-injury.
- Neglect Cast/Boot/Brace Care: Follow your doctor’s instructions on proper care for your cast, boot, or brace. This might include keeping it dry, avoiding excessive sweating, and attending to any signs of irritation.
- Forget the Crutches: If your doctor advises using crutches or a walker, do so diligently. Ignoring weight-bearing restrictions can put undue stress on your healing foot or ankle.
- Wear the Wrong Shoes: Resist the urge to squeeze back into your favorite shoes too soon. Wear supportive footwear approved by your doctor to ensure proper healing and prevent further issues.
While this list isn’t exhaustive, it will make a difference! We hope it helps you get back on your feet without incident.
