Do I Have a Bunion?
(And Can I Fix It Without Surgery?)
The bunion (Hallux Valgus) is one of the most common foot deformities we treat, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. Patients often ask:
“Did my shoes cause this?” or “Can I use a splint to straighten it?”
If you are navigating the confusion of bunion pain, Advanced Foot Care of NJ is here to assist. Read on to learn about the medical reality behind the bump…and how to manage it, too.
What is a Bunion, Really?
A common misconception is that a bunion is a “growth” of extra bone or a callus.
A bunion is actually a dislocated joint.
- The long bone of your foot (the metatarsal) shifts outward, while your big toe leans inward toward the other toes.
- That protrusion or “bump” you see is the head of your own metatarsal bone, sticking out where it shouldn’t be.
The “Grandma” Factor: Genetics vs. Shoes
Did your high heels cause your bunion? No. But they aren’t helping!
- Most people inherit a specific foot type (usually flat feet or unstable arches) that makes them prone to bunions.
- If your mother or grandmother had them, you are at high risk.
- Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes do not create the bunion, but they accelerate the deformity by squeezing the toes together and aggravating the unstable joint.
Can I Fix It Without Surgery?
This is the top question patients ask Google.
The Truth: You cannot “cure” a bunion without surgery. Once the bone has shifted, no amount of yoga or splinting will move it back into place permanently.
However, you CAN manage the pain and slow the progression:
- Change Your “Toe Box”: You need shoes with a wide, square toe box. If you can’t wiggle your toes freely, the shoe is too tight.
- Custom Orthotics: Since bunions are caused by instability (usually overpronation), a custom orthotic acts as a stabilizer. By correcting your arch, we reduce the pressure that forces the big toe out of alignment.
- Toe Spacers: Silicone spacers can provide temporary relief by gently stretching the tight tendons while you relax at home.
When Is It Time for Surgery?
You do not need surgery just because you have a bump. We typically recommend considering a procedure only when:
- Pain rules your life: You can’t walk for exercise or buy shoes that fit without pain.
- The deformity is progressing: Your big toe is crossing over or under the second toe.
- Conservative care failed: Orthotics and wide shoes no longer provide relief.
Stop the Drift
Bunions get bigger over time, so don’t wait until you need surgery to seek help. Early intervention with orthotics can often keep your feet comfortable and functional for years, so schedule a bunion evaluation today. Let’s check your mechanics and build a plan to keep you moving.
