Summer Foot Care Q & A
From poolside hazards to beachside blisters, keeping your feet healthy through the summer requires a proactive approach. Understandably, many are too busy having fun to worry about such things! That’s when they end up in our office with aches, pains, and preventable problems.
Advanced Foot Care of NJ wants you to enjoy the season without excess worry, so we’ve gathered some of the most common queries people have for the summer & warm weather months. Read on to stay one step ahead!
Q: Can pool chemicals really wreck my feet?
A: Chlorine, a common pool disinfectant, can definitely dry out your skin. While it won’t permanently damage your feet, prolonged exposure can lead to cracking and irritation. Rinse your feet thoroughly with clean water after swimming and pat them dry, especially between the toes.
Q: Are flip-flops the best poolside footwear?
A: Flip-flops are convenient but not exactly supportive. While they’re okay for walking short distances, avoid wearing them for extended periods. Going barefoot isn’t the best idea, either: hot pool decks can burn your soles, and shared spaces are often teeming with bacteria and fungus. Choose water shoes with good tread for better protection and support.
Q: Why do I get blisters at the beach?
A: Friction is the foe! Sand, ill-fitting sandals, and prolonged walking in hot weather can all rub your skin raw. If you’re constantly dealing with blisters, try applying petroleum jelly or blister balm on areas prone to friction, like your heels, toes, and the sides of your feet.
Q: My toenails turn green after swimming – is it the pool chlorine?
A: While chlorine can discolor hair, it’s not the culprit behind green toenails. The usual suspect is a type of fungus that thrives in moist environments like pool decks. Avoid sharing flip-flops – this is a quick way to spread athlete’s foot or other fungal infections.
