Fall Sports Injuries: Protecting Your Feet and Ankles
Autumn is a popular time for sports, but sports come with inherent risks of overuse injury. Knowing these risks, as well as the available treatments helps to prevent or mitigate season-ending injuries. Below, Advanced Foot Care of New Jersey will cover some common foot and ankle issues that athletes may encounter during the fall sports season. We hope that helps you stay moving!
Football and Turf Toe
Turf toe occurs when the big toe is hyperextended, often due to sudden changes of direction or planting the foot forcefully on a hard surface.
- This injury is common in sports played on artificial turf, such as football. Symptoms of turf toe include pain, swelling, and bruising at the base of the big toe.
Treatment for turf toe may include:
- Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (RICE).
- Over-the-counter pain relievers.
- In severe cases, a cast or brace may be necessary.
Soccer and Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, a tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, becomes inflamed.
- This injury is common in athletes who participate in sports that involve running and jumping, such as soccer. Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include heel pain, especially in the morning or after prolonged periods of inactivity.
Treatment for plantar fasciitis may include:
- Orthotics or supportive shoes.
- Physical therapy and stretching exercises.
- In severe cases, corticosteroid injections may be recommended.
Cross Country: Stress Fractures
Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone that can occur due to repetitive stress. They are common in runners, including cross-country athletes.
- Symptoms of a stress fracture include pain that worsens with activity.
Treatment for stress fractures typically involves:
- Immobilization and rest.
- In some cases, a cast or boot may be necessary.
It is important to avoid putting weight on the injured area until the bone has healed.
Preventing Sports Injuries
Prevention is always key. Proper warm-up and cool-down routines, wearing appropriate footwear, and maintaining good conditioning can help reduce your risk, too!
