Thanksgiving: Thank Your Feet Before You Eat
Thanksgiving is a time for feasts and family gatherings, a joyous occasion to celebrate with friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, it also relates to a few of the more common and unpleasant podiatric conditions. This Thanksgiving, thank your feet for their hard work and spare them some discomfort! To find out how, look at the most typical related issues below. We’ll give you some pointers on how to treat them, too.
Gout:
- This variety of arthritis is quite painful, characterized by a buildup of uric acid that crystallizes in the joints.
- Commonly afflicting the big toe, gout is linked to diet and, unfortunately, to many Thanksgiving favorites.
- Organ meat, a key ingredient in many gravies, can put you at risk. The same applies to red wine, brandy, beer, and other rich sauces. Obesity is also a hazard with gout, so feast responsibly!
Plantar Fasciitis:
- Long hours of standing or walking around the kitchen can inflame the plantar fascia, causing sharp pain in the heels.
- Combat this by wearing supportive, cushioned footwear and using orthotic inserts to provide added arch support.
Neuropathy:
- Excessive consumption of sugary treats and alcoholic beverages during Thanksgiving can exacerbate symptoms of neuropathy in individuals with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes.
- Monitor your sugar intake, stay hydrated, and wear comfortable, cushioned shoes to minimize nerve pressure.
While it is good to stay informed on podiatric health, we at Advanced Footcare of NJ, LLC, still think that you should put your feet up! Relax, enjoy your meal, and remember to acknowledge all the good work your feet did this year.
