Foot Pain in Children: Could a Tarsal Coalition Be the Culprit?
Is your child complaining of persistent foot pain, especially around the heel or ankle? While “growing pains” are often the assumed cause, it’s important to consider other possibilities.
One uncommon but potentially serious condition is called a tarsal coalition. And in this blog post, Advanced Foot Care of NJ will explain what a tarsal coalition is, how it’s diagnosed, and what treatment options are available. Let’s get to it!
What is a Tarsal Coalition?
The word “coalition” typically describes an alliance for combined action.
- In the foot, however, a tarsal coalition refers to an abnormal connection between two or more bones in the rear part of the foot, known as the tarsal bones.
- These bones are meant to move independently, allowing for a full range of motion. When they fuse together, it creates stiffness, restricts movement, and often leads to pain.
Signs, Symptoms, and Diagnosis:
Tarsal coalitions often become symptomatic during adolescence as the bones mature and harden.
- The pain is usually felt in the hindfoot, just below the ankle, and can worsen with activity. If your child is experiencing persistent foot pain that doesn’t improve with rest, it’s important to seek professional evaluation.
- While a regular X-ray can often reveal a coalition, sometimes a more detailed MRI is necessary to fully assess the condition.
Treatment Options:
The good news? Many tarsal coalitions can be managed conservatively.
- Custom orthotics, designed to support the foot and improve biomechanics, can often provide significant pain relief.
- However, in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to separate the fused bones and restore normal function.
Don’t Dismiss Foot Pain
There are many positive “alliances for combined action” in the feet, but this kind of coalition isn’t one of them! If your child’s foot pain is being dismissed as “growing pains,” don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion. After all, no one wants to find out the problem is worse than they thought through unexpected aches and pains!
